A son’s seventh birthday was marked by a transformation of his toddler/nursery themed bedroom. He had a converted crib twin bed along with the other existing furniture that had been with him since birth. The homeowner wanted the redesign to fit him until he became a full-fledged tween. This called for an upgrade. A queen bed was a must for the project. At the time the six year old was in a deep dive into sports. His favorite teams were the Denver Broncos (orange and blue) and his school color was dragon green. This made the color choices simple and seamless.
A rugged masculine sports themed bedroom was the goal. To achieve a lodge look a blue and wood stripe was contracted out. Transparent stained wood slats on top of Sherwin Williams Salty Dog paint created a feature wall which also made the room appear larger by drawing the eye up to the ceiling and disguising the slanted upper portion of the wall. During the initial consultation it was discovered that he did not play in his room. His bedroom was for resting and reading. Creating a reading nook was essential to the project. Fortunately, Pottery Barn Kids does a tremendous job in creating cool functional kid-friendly pieces. The bean bag chairs and the lumberjack plaid bedding are from PB Kids.
Since this is a kids room, the art had to be personal to the boy. Framed sports team’s (Broncos, Rangers, and Mavericks) posters went up on the wall to create a gallery vibe to complete the reading nook. To break up all the brown in the room, metal floating shelves were added to provide an area to showcase trophies and other memorabilia.
